🏠Rural Living Tip 
#1. When deciding to move to a rural community, don't just view the house and its' property.  Be sure to view the surrounding area bordering the property you are interested in. Especially in the winter when the use of the area isn't always obvious. This is very important in agricultural areas

If there is an open surrounding field, there is a good chance it is a cash crop.  This means there will be tractors and equipment working the fields and farmers don't work weekdays 9-5.  Be prepared for tractor noise and potential dust early morning to after dark. There will also likely be accompanying seasonal smells. Possible irrigation.

For the majority of the seasons the value of a neighbouring open field is the view and privacy of no direct neighbours.  It provides the arrival of the tractors and harvest which is an exciting time if you take the time to learn how it's all done. It's just a matter of knowing what to expect of a neighbour.

🏠Rural Living Tip Tuesday The sign is humorous but it has a valid point. Farms and their communities provide a fantastic way of living, however they do come with some added attributes which may or may not please everyone. 

When you're considering a home in a rural area, be sure to take note of the surrounding area for any working and hobby farms. In particular livestock or certain crops. They likely each have unique aromas and on given days can be rather strong if you aren't used to them.  Make note of wind direction to the home. Manure management tends to make a difference - small manure pile vs a liquid manure pit. A couple goats vs several head of cattle. Pasture livestock vs housed. Keep in mind farm smells tend to be seasonal and likely to be stronger when you spend more time outdoors. 

There is zero negativity from my standpoint for a surrounding farm. The scent of a farm tends not to offend me. To be honest, it's a smell of growing up in a rural community and home. However, it is something to take into consideration If your nose is sensitive to particular scents scents. Always remember, the farm has likely been there for years, so if one moves near it and doesn't appreciate it, they must understand it is what it is with no complaints.
